Proof of general higher education entrance qualification
The proof of general higher education entrance qualification may be fulfilled by one of the following certificates:
- secondary school-leaving examination (Matura)
- vocational matriculation examination (Berufsreifeprüfung)
- general university entrance examination for medical degree programmes (Studienberechtigungsprüfung Medizin)
- international secondary school-leaving examination that is considered equivalent to one of the aforementioned Austrian examinations
If you do not hold an Austrian school-leaving certificate (Matura), the regulations for International Admission also apply.
International Admission
Further information regarding international documents:
Legalisation: Please note the regulations regarding legalization of official documents issued non-EU/EEA countries.
Translation:Certified translations are required for all documents that were not originally issued in English or German. Documents should only be translated once they have been legalised.
Equivalency of international school-leaving certificates:
- IB Diploma:
The IB diploma is considered as equivalent to an Austrian qualification. - School-leaving certificates from EU/EEA countries
School-leaving qualifications obtained in EU or EEA member states are usually seen as equivalent to an Austrian qualification, provided they guarantee access to higher education in the selected subject in the applicant’s country of origin. - School-leaving certificates) from non-EU/EEA countries
School-leaving qualifications obtained in non-EU or EEA member states may – in some cases - not be considered as equivalent to an Austrian qualification.
In any case, the secondary school certificate will be checked regarding the equivalency to an Austrian qualification within the process of your application to KL.
If you have obtained a non-equivalent school-leaving qualification, admission to a Bachelor programme at KL is only possible in the following cases:
- Completion of a bachelor programme at a recognized university, alternatively 1 or 2 years of university education (60 to 120 ECTS, country-specific)
- Completion of additional exams (“Ergänzungsprüfungen”).
These additional exams may only be taken within the admission process at an Austrian public university. KL does not offer these additional exams.
Special requirements for bachelor programme Medical Science
Bachelor programme Medical Science
- Latin: Proof of completion of a Latin course of at least 10 hours/week at a secondary school – if you cannot provide proof, you will be required to sit a supplementary examination in Latin before taking your bachelor examination
- Biology: Proof of completion of a biology course of at least one hour/week at a secondary school after the eighth year of compulsory education, or proof of a supplementary examination in biology pursuant to section 124a Universities Act (Universitätsgesetz) in conjunction with section 2 University Entrance Qualification Order 1998
Proof of English language proficiency with minimum level B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR):
- IELTS (minimum score 6.0)
- TOEFL (minimum score 87)
- Cambridge: First Certificate in English (FCE)
- or an equivalent qualification
If you do not hold an Austrian school-leaving certificate (Matura), the regulations for International Admission also apply.
Special requirements for master programme Human Medicine
Bachelor degree in Health Sciences from Karl Landsteiner University
- Alternatively, an equivalent qualification in health sciences with a workload of at least 180 ECTS from a recognised Austrian or foreign higher education institution
- Proof of German language proficiency with minimum level C1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR):
- German-language secondary school
- Goethe-Zertifikat C1 issued by the Goethe Institut
- ÖSD Mittelstufe Deutsch certificate
Proof of English language proficiency with minimum level B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) for the Biomedical Engineering and Health Care Management electives:
- IELTS (minimum score: 6.0)
- TOEFL (minimum score: 87)
- Cambridge: First Certificate in English (FCE)
- or an equivalent qualification
If you do not hold an Austrian Bachelor degree, the regulations for International Admission also apply.

Proof of general university entrance qualification
Proof of a general university entrance qualification can be provided by means of one of the following:
- General university entrance certificate for scientific degree programmes
- Knowledge of the language of instruction: German and in some case English. Applicants must have achieved a level of German as well as English proficiency of at least B2 under the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
