Division of Psychodynamics
Mission Statement of the Division Psychodynamics
A core area of the University Professorship of Psychotherapy Research as well as the Division of Psychodynamics at the Karl Landsteiner University of Health Sciences, Krems, is devoted to the dynamic and more complex models of subjectivity and mental life that emerge from the interplay of conscious and non-conscious parts.
Ongoing and planned research in the Division of Psychodynamics includes:
- philosophy of science,
- clinical,
- empirical,
- as well as applied psychodynamic research.
Subjectivity and mental life
Contemporary psychodynamic research is devoted to clinical, empirical, philosophy of science, and inter- and multidisciplinary approaches. It examines the mode of action and efficacy of the clinical application of its psychodynamic theoretical assumptions, its research methodologies, and its clinical treatment techniques, and the application of these to nonclinical phenomena and branches of knowledge.
Psychodynamic psychotherapy research
The methodologies applied are correspondingly broad. In an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary way, the psychodynamic direction strives to take into account the results and methodologies of neighboring disciplines (such as cognitive sciences and neurobiology).
However, as a unique selling point of the Professorship of Psychotherapy Research and the Division of Psychodynamics, the following should be mentioned:
- the first-person theories and first-person methodologies of psychodynamic psychotherapy research
- the applied psychotherapy research that has emerged from it.

Research
The methodology of current and planned research projects in the Department of Psychodynamics includes metacognitive and epistemological approaches to complement state of the art psychotherapy research.
