Minister of Science Polaschek visits the KL

On Wednesday, 31 August 2022, the Federal Minister for Education, Science and Research, Martin Polaschek, visited the Karl Landsteiner University of Health Sciences in Krems (KL Krems) for the first time.

In addition to a tour of the building, the programme included an introduction to the practice-oriented, interprofessional study programmes in medicine and psychology as well as the current research topics at KL Krems. Rudolf Mallinger, Rector of the Karl Landsteiner University of Health Sciences, reported on the status quo of the PhD programme Mental Health and Neuroscience, which will be submitted for accreditation in autumn.

Science Minister Polaschek was offered an insight into the research activities in the laboratory of the Department of Pharmacology, Physiology and Microbiology. Gerald Obermair, Head of the Division of Physiology, presented the Division's basic neurobiological research and how it is embedded in the research area of Mental Health and Neuroscience. He presented the high-resolution life-cell imaging microscope in combination with 2-channel electrophysiology, which is part of the Core Facility at the Krems Campus and represents a central device for measuring synaptic functions for research into nerve functions in health and disease.

In the Skills Lab of KL, Manfred Wieser, Vice Rector for Education, taught the skill of suture placement. In the specially equipped practice rooms, the future doctors learn clinical skills and practise independently before applying these skills to patients. Various models and practice programmes are available for this purpose. In addition, students work on their communication skills in the Skills Lab with trained actors playing patients.
