Information about the Coronavirus

During its press conference on Monday, 30.3.2020, the Federal Government announced, among other things, that for groups of people with massive pre-existing illnesses a mandatory exemption from work or home office should be implemented, if this has not already been implemented anyway. The Federal Government will refund the wage costs for this period of exemption. We have already implemented this measure since the beginning of the determination to home office.

In his press conference on Tuesday, 31 March 2020, Heinz Faßmann, Minister of Education and Science, did not yet want to decide when the schools and universities will be able to resume operations. As at the schools, there will be no regular classes or teaching in the presence at KL University until the end of April.

As a reaction to the current situation, Karl Landsteiner University of Health Sciences (KL) is planning to carry out the written part of the two-part admission procedure for the bachelor's programme Health Sciences ONLINE. The basic content of the written test will remain unchanged even in an online procedure.

The date for the entrance test will be moved back in coordination with the date for the written Matura 2020, which is set by the Ministry of Education, Science and Research, from 19 May 2020. Specific information on the date and procedure of the online test will follow after the Easter holidays or in consideration of any possible stipulations regarding the date of the Matura. As always, we try to provide a date that is feasible for all applicants.

The deadline for online applications for the Bachelor's program in Health Sciences has been extended to Sunday, April 26, 2020.

The admission procedures for the Psychology Bachelor study programme and the Psychology Master study programme are unaffected by the current situation and are already taking place continuously in the form of online interviews.

Status quo admission procedures at the KL

The Karl Landsteiner University of Health Sciences is fully in line with the deadlines set by the Ministry of Education when conducting the admission process for the Bachelor of Health Sciences.

On 17 March 2020, the Ministry of Education, Science and Research decided to postpone the Central Matura 2020. A new date has not yet been set.

As always, it is our concern to find a date and procedure that is feasible for all our applicants under fair conditions. Detailed information about the date and the procedure will be published before Easter.

The admission procedures for the Bachelor's degree in Psychology and the Master's degree in Psychology are unaffected by the current situation and are already taking place in the form of online interviews.

Today, Sunday 15 March 2020, the Austrian government announced further measures to curb the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) in a special session of the National Council.  The mobility in public spaces will be further restricted. The corresponding law was passed unanimously in the National Council at noon. Karl Landsteiner University of Health Sciences (KL) continues to fully support the strategy of the Federal Government.

Due to these new developments, the university will switch to online operation from Monday, 16 March 2020. This affects all areas of the university - teaching, research and administration. As already informed, education will continue to be carried out via distance learning until further notice.

The KL buildings will be closed from Monday, 16 March 2020 at 12 noon.

With these measures we ensure that first and foremost our employees are actively protected against infection with the coronavirus pathogen. Furthermore, we want to ensure that the entire operation of the university is maintained online in the best possible way. 

Of course, we will keep you informed about further developments at KL as before.

Due to the current situation and the requirements of the Austrian Federal Government to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in Austria, the attendance of classes at the Karl Landsteiner University of Health Sciences (KL) and at the University Hospitals of St. Pölten, Tulln and Krems will be suspended with effect from tomorrow Wednesday 11 March 2020 until 3 April 2020 or until further notice. Until further notice, education will take place via distance learning, in which exam-relevant contents are to be worked out in self-study.

Administrative and research operations may continue according to the current state of affairs and shall remain in place until revoked by the university management board in coordination with the authorities.

Staff, teachers and students are requested to check their KL email account regularly for updated information.

The Open House Day on March 14th 2020 is cancelled!

Due to the current situation and the requirements of the Austrian Federal Government to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in Austria the Open House Day on 14 March 2020 is cancelled. From the current point of view, there is no alternative date planned for spring.

Inquiries from interested people will be answered in any case – we are working on finding a solution for the consultation within the next few days. For further information please check the KL website regularly.

The novel coronavirus (short: COVID-19) is a viral infectious disease with the pathogen SARS-CoV-2.

Infection occurs primarily via drop infection from human to human.

Besides respiratory tract secretions and saliva, urine, stool and blood can also be infectious.

The incubation period - the time between infection and appearance of the first symptoms of the disease - is about two weeks, in some cases longer.

The clinical picture is similar to a mild to severe cold with symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties.

In a few cases there are severe courses of the disease with, for example, pneumonia. In these cases, old and immunocompromised persons are particularly at risk.
