University Hospital Krems: Science Prize for Pneumology

The Science Prize 2018 of the Medical Society of Lower Austria was awarded this year to Dr. Klaus Hackner of the University Hospital Krems, Department of Pulmology (Chairman: Prim. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Errhalt).

The science prize-winning work 1) investigated the occurrence of fever after bronchoscopy with regard to a possible relevant infection by determining the leukocyte count, C-reactive protein and procalcitonin. The authors were able to show that an increase in procalcitonin is a clear indication of bacterial infection after bronchoscopy.

In the discussion that took place after the presentation of the scientific work, Dr. Hackner pointed out the practical relevance of the results. The occurrence of an increased Procalcitonins with occurrence of fever after bronchoscopy should result in an antibiotic administration considering the high probability of a bacterial infection.

The award ceremony took place during the 33rd annual conference of the Medical Society of Lower Austria on 17 November 2018 in the Hotel Schwaighof in St. Pölten. The prize is endowed with Euro 3000,- and is awarded annually to an outstanding scientific work after thorough examination by a multidisciplinary jury.
