Spontaneous laughter is recognized worldwide

Being able to distinguish forced from hearty laughter is a human ability that is spread across cultural boundaries.

This is the finding of a study published in Psychological Science with the participation of  the KL Professor in Psychology Stefan Stieger. The study played audio files of differently motivated laughter from American women to test persons from different continents and cultures. With great accuracy, the subjects were able to distinguish spontaneous from forced laughter across cultural boundaries.
