Golden Medal of Honour for Professor Herbert Frank

Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner described Univ.-Prof. Dr. Herbert Frank as "outstanding physician" and "personality with international appeal". The "Great Golden Medal of Honor for Services to the Federal State of Lower Austria" was presented to Herbert Frank, the Head of the Department of Internal Medicine at the University Hospital Tulln on Friday, December 14, at the Palais Niederösterreich in Vienna's Herrengasse.

"We can be proud to have such a competent physician, recognized expert and established scientist in Lower Austria," said the provincial governor. Under his leadership, the Department of Internal Medicine with its focus on cardiology, gastroenterology, metabolic diseases and pulmonology has become a "figurehead" at the University Hospital of Tulln. Professor Frank is also committed to training and further training young colleagues "at the highest level", said Mikl-Leitner. Since 2005 he has organised five training events a year in Langenlois, and in 2007 he was the first hospital in Austria to establish a summer training academy at University Hospital Tulln. And Herbert Frank is the only cardiologist in Lower Austria who has received the highest scientific award of the European Society of Cardiology.

The governor also thanked Frank for his commitment to the Karl Landsteiner University, which is writing a "success story". "Herbert Frank played a leading role in the foundation and development of this faculty. In 2016, he was elected to the board of the University Hospitals for Internal Medicine of the Karl Landsteiner University. Mikl-Leitner concluded by saying that he had achieved extraordinary things for and in Lower Austria with a great deal of competence and heart.

In his words of thanks, Frank recalled the takeover of "Internal Medicine" at the University Hospital Tulln and the realignment of this department. "In 2002, there were five senior physician positions and one assistant physician position, today there are 13 senior physicians and 10 assistant physicians. The Tulln Hospital enjoys an excellent reputation as a teaching hospital, said Frank. About 640 students per year would gain practical experience in various departments. With the Karl Landsteiner University one created an important training basis for physicians. According to Frank, the aim was to "train in one's own country" and to "keep the trained doctors in one's own country".
