Cochlear implantation - Music therapy improves quality of life
The number of elderly (65+) recieving a cochlear implant (CI) is increasing. Docotors have recognised that the better and more intensive the training with the new hearing prosthesis, the higher the satisfaction, especially among older, hearing-impaired patients.
To objectively confirm these assessments, OÄ Priv. Doz. Dr. Astrid Magele, MBA investigated with her team and under the direction of Prim. Prof. Dr. Georg Sprinzl the influence of music therapy as an accompanying rehabilitation tool for cochlear implanted patients over 65 years at the University Hospital St. Pölten.
After 10 weeks of music therapy, the subjects' music perception and hearing improved. The patients reported an increased quality of life, more satisfaction and less frustration regarding their poor hearing. Increased participation in social life and positive effects on general cognitive status were observed. Music therapy is gladly used by the majority of those affected.
