Thalidomide for the Management of Gastrointestinal Bleeding

... in a Palliative Care Setting.

Recent publication

Gastrointestinal bleeding is common in palliative care patients. Patients' poor health can make it difficult to carry out the necessary diagnostic tests and identify the cause of the bleeding. Together with colleagues from the Medical Universities of Vienna and Graz, DDr Elisabeth Fabian, BSc, from the Division of Internal Medicine 2 at the University Hospital Krems, has published a case report of a palliative care patient with persistent gastrointestinal bleeding that worsened her general condition and blood count. The administration of thalidomide stopped the bleeding and had a positive effect on the patient. The doctors summarise the advantages and disadvantages of thalidomide in their open access publication in the journal Digestive Diseases.
