Routine laboratory parameters to support decision on parenteral nutrition in palliative care
Recent publication
Palliative care patients often receive parenteral nutrition at the end of life, but there is limited evidence of its benefits. Researchers set out to analyse the relationship between the use of parenteral nutrition and survival in palliative care units and reviewed data from 113 patients. They were able to develop a decision tree model based on three routine laboratory parameters (CRP, urea, LDH). The tree model helps clinicians decide whether or not to use parenteral nutrition in palliative care patients. The paper is open access in the journal Frontiers in Nutrition. Dr Gudrun Kreye from the Clinical Division of Internal Medicine II, Krems University Hospital, was a co-autor.
