From existential uncertainty to a new mindset promoting recovery

Exploring the development of uncertainty experience in women with vulvar neoplasia - A qualitative longitudinal study

Recent publication

In a qualitative longitudinal study, the experience of uncertainty in relation to one's own illness is analysed. Seven women who had undergone surgery for vulvar neoplasia were interviewed after the procedure in three to five semi-structured interviews. They talked about their past and future experiences with regard to a possible recurrence of the cancer. The answers were analysed using the theory of reconceptualised uncertainty in illness. Jasmin Eppel-Meichlinger and Hanna Mayer, both from the Division of Nursing Science, were part of the four-person research team. Their findings are to be incorporated into oncological care in order to utilise opportunities in dealing with chronic illness and avoid negative aspects for maintaining health. The work was supported by KL (open access funding) and the Swiss Nursing Science Foundation. It is freely accessible in the journal "BMC Women's Health".
