Austrian tricentric real-life analysis of molecular profiles

... of metastatic biliary tract cancer patients

Recent publication

The data of 92 patients with metastatic biliary tract cancer were examined by Dr Hossein Taghizadeh, PhD, an assistant physician at the Division of Internal Medicine 1 at St. Pölten University Hospital. His aim and that of his colleagues was to obtain starting points for personalised therapy in this aggressive type of cancer. The real-world patient data came from three cancer centres in Austria between 2013 and 2022. When the molecular gene profiles were evaluated, 198 different mutations in 89 genes were found in 61 of the 92 patients. A small proportion of the patients examined received a therapy tailored to these gene variants. Half of them benefited from the targeted therapy. Based on their study, the researchers call for routine sequencing for improved and personalised therapy in patients with metastatic biliary tract cancer.

Thanks to open-access funding by Karl Landsteiner University, the paper has been published freely available in the journal "Frontiers in Oncology".
