“We wanted to create a spatial equivalent for new didactic methods at KL. The goal is to design an open space that encourages study and research while at the same time blending in with its surroundings at the Krems Campus.”

Architect

Project description

  • Urban planning

The building borders the Krems Campus grounds to the south-east below the Kolpinghaus. Both its shape and scale harmonise with the surrounding buildings and natural setting. The building has two sections – a teaching and research wing and an administration wing. The shape of the building reflects its function. The structure fits perfectly into the existing architectural and natural environment.

  • Building structure

The building’s position and formal design mark it as the prelude to the new KL Campus complex. It was designed as an integral part of the overall ensemble. Its dual function as an office and teaching building is clearly evident from the structure’s outward appearance: the two building complexes are connected by a two-storey bridge.

  • Functions

A clear spatial differentiation between the various functions and their content is included in the architectural concept. While the teaching facilities are located in the south wing of the building along with the foyer and banquet hall, all the office and administration spaces are housed in the neighbouring section of the building. The bridge connecting the two wings is home to the self-study area. There is a recreation and communication zone extending over two storeys that link all the adjoining use areas.

  • Open space concept

The building merges with its immediate natural and architectural surroundings in a variety of ways. The zone between and around the buildings will be a central meeting space.

  • Material and colour concept

The façade is structured by flush floor-to-ceiling windows. Homogeneous façade material will be used for the unbroken outer cladding. Natural materials will be used in the interior.

Porträt Rektor Rudolf Mallinger - Karl Landsteiner Privatuniversität

“The building design is perfectly tailored to our needs. The two-storey bridge connects the two wings – one for teaching and research, the other for administration – and will serve as a space for students to study and relax outside of class. This sends a positive message that students are at the centre of everything we do.”

Professor Dr Rudolf Mallinger
Rector of KL
