Vibrio cholerae-An emerging pathogen in Austrian bathing waters?

Recent publikcation

Carmen Rehm, MSc conducts research on Vibrio cholerae at the Division of Water Quality and Health at Karl Landsteiner University and is the first author of a review article published in the  Central European Journal of Medicine on the non-toxic and thus non-cholera-transmitting virus strains of this genus. On the one hand, the researchers evaluate whether infections by V. cholerae have increased, and which environmental factors favour the occurrence of the viruses. In addition, they list common infections caused by V. cholerae and give an overview of clinical diagnostic options, treatment options and antibiotic resistance. Using “Neusiedler See” as an example, a risk assessment tool and modern detection methods for water bodies are presented. The study was funded by the Gesellschaft für Forschungsförderung Niederösterreich (GFF).
