Systemic Anticancer Treatment Near the End of Life

A Narrative Literature Review

Recent publication

Referring to the recommendations of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO), researchers from the Division of Palliative Medicine, Internal Medicine 2 of the University Hospital Krems discuss the use of chemotherapy and immunotherapy in cases of poor prognosis at the end of life. Systemic cancer therapies can worsen the quality of life and therefore their use in the context of palliative care should be critically questioned. A review paper summarises the effects of chemotherapy or immunotherapy described in the literature and factors for the use of the therapies at the end of life. Senior author Dr Gudrun Kreye is the Head of the Palliative Care Unit at Krems University Hospital and mentored Theresa Geyer, a student at Karl Landsteiner University and the first author of the paper. The work was funded by Forschungsimpulse and Open Access funding and has been published freely in Current Treatment Options in Oncology.
