Patient Breathing Motion and Delivery Specifics

...Influencing the Robustness of a Proton Pancreas Irradiation

Recent publication

Using a special technique, 4D dose calculation, the proton treatment plans for pancreas patients with small moving tumours were analysed. An important influence on the accuracy of the treatment is the patient's breathing movement, to which the radiation must be adapted. Despite good, robust results, the analysis showed outliers in some patients, which requires continuous monitoring in clinical practice.

The study, published open access in Cancers with the collaboration of Prof Dr Piero Fossati, MD, Head of the Division of Radiation Oncology, and Prof private lecturer DI Markus Stock, PhD, Head of the Division of Medical Physics, serves as a basis for the further improvement of treatment strategies for mobile tumours.
