Effects of paediatric intensive care
...due to congenital heart defects on maternal mental health
Recent publication
Newborns with a congenital heart defect often need intensive treatment immediately after birth. Private lecture DDr Anna Höflich from the Division of Psychiatry at the University Hospital Tulln and a team of researchers investigated whether this intensive medical treatment has an influence on mother-child bonding. 129 mothers filled out a questionnaire on mother-child bonding, postpartum depression, stress factors and coping strategies. While about 2/3 of the mothers came with their children for screening, about one-third of the mothers surveyed had their children in a paediatric intensive care unit.
