PhD Program Tumor Biology
The PhD programme "TUMOR BIOLOGY — Basic, Translational, and Clinical Cancer Research" at Karl Landsteiner University is an excellence-oriented doctoral programme with an interdisciplinary focus in the field of oncology, basic and translational cancer research, and clinical and applied tumor biology, including radiation therapy: It enables PhD students to develop and conduct experimental and empirical research projects in these highly relevant and rapidly evolving disciplines in health science. The aim is to enable future scientists to take a coherent view of the different subject areas — from molecular mechanisms to clinical application and advanced radiation therapy — and at the same time carry out specialized research work.
Cancer is one of the leading global health challenges, with its worldwide incidence and mortality continuing to rise despite major advances in prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. Addressing this growing burden requires interdisciplinary research spanning basic science, translational medicine, and clinical oncology. The PhD programme “TUMOR BIOLOGY —Basic, Translational, and Clinical Cancer Research” investigates the molecular and immunological mechanisms of solid and hematologic malignancies and translates these discoveries into innovative diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. By integrating expertise in molecular oncology, hematology, radiation oncology, and medical physics — including advanced radiation and particle therapy — the programme prepares graduates for interdisciplinary careers in academia, clinical research, and the life and technical sciences.
In line with international recommendations, the programme integrates molecular and cellular cancer biology with translational, clinical, and technical research, advancing our understanding of cancer pathogenesis, accelerating the development of next-generation diagnostics and therapies, and ultimately improving the lives of cancer patients worldwide.
