Who can receive support?

Anyone can receive support - because financial barriers should never stand in the way of education. 

We provide information on government, university, and private funding opportunities - so that you can finance your studies in the best possible way and successfully complete your degree. 

 

Government support

Students enrolled at a private university are entitled to receive Familienbeihilfe (family allowance)

Students at private universities are entitled to the same study grants as those attending public universities in Austria. Every Austrian students can apply for public study grants.

The DAAD Stipendiendatenbank (scholarship database) provides information about DAAD scholarship programs for international students and researchers, as well as offers from other selected funding organisations. StipendiumPlus is an umbrella organisation for 13 different scholarship programs in Germany that are funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) to support particularly talented students and young researchers. Details can be found at https://www.stipendiumplus.de/startseite. 

The Bundes­ausbildungs­förderungs­gesetz (BAföG) regulates state support for the education of students in Germany. Details on BAföG can be found at www.bafög.de

Financing and Loans 

You also have the option of financing your studies through a student loan. The best first step is to inquire with your local bank. Additionally, check with your federal state or regional authorities to find out whether funding opportunities for medical studies are available in your area. 

The Kremser Bank offers medical students at KL a student loan with special terms. Further information and contact details can be found in the  Produktblatt

Brain Capital offers KL students a flexible and fair financing option based on an Income Share Agreement (ISA) - also known as the Reverse Generation Contract.

The principle: study first, pay later based on income.

Students do not pay their tuition fees during their studies, but only after they start their careers - and only if they reach a certain minimum income. this means that studying remains accessible to everyone, regardless of their financial background.

Scholarships for medical studies

There are a variety of scholarships available for medical students at KL, most notably the NÖ Landesstipendium Medizin (NÖ Medical Scholarship) offered by the State of Lower Austria.

The NÖ Landesstipendium Medizin (NÖ Medical Scholarship) provides financial support to students of human medicine at KL and offers career prospects in Lower Austria.

KL Sozialstipendium (KL Social Scholarship)

The Sozialstipendien offered by the State of Lower Austria aim to enable as many prospective students as possible to access degree programs at KL who are unable or find it difficult to finance their tuition fees from their own resources. 

IMPORTANT: The initial application for the  KL Sozialstipendium (for Medicine and Psychology programs) can only be submitted until the end of the winter semester 2025/26. Students who have received a KL Sozialstipendium up to and including the winter semester 2025/26 can continue to receive it until the end of their studies, provides they meet the existing scholarship conditions. 

The KL Sozialstipendien can be applied for by students who are registered with a primary or secondary residence in Lower Austria and are entitled to social benefits.  

  • Funding for medical students: up to 80% of semester tuition and fees
  • Funding for psychology students: up to 25% of semester tuition and fees

NÖ Sonderprämie für Medizin (Special Bonus for Medicine)

The state of Lower Austria provides funding for graduates of human medicine at the Karl Landsteiner University who, after completing their studies, work as doctors in a hospital under the legal authority of the state of Lower Austria or in a private practice in Lower Austria.

IMPORTANT: Under the current conditions, only KL graduates who began their studies up to and including the winter semester 2024/25 are eligible to apply for the NÖ Sonderprämie Medizin.

The Burgenländische Medizin-Stipendium (BMS) is a regular monthly financial support designed to help medical students successfully complete their studies. Eligible applicants are those with a primary or secondary residence in Burgenland who commit to completing their clinical practical year in Burgenland and to begin their training as a general practicioner or specialist in on of the five regional hospitals within six months after graduation.

The district of Kelheim in Lower Bavaria is committed to ensuring good medical care in its region and supporting the development of young medical professionals. Therefore, Kelheim awards up to five scholarships annually to medical students.

Leistungsstipendium StudFG

Every year, Karl Landsteiner University awards Leistungsstipendien (merit-based scholarships) in acknowledgement of outstanding academic achievement, based on funding from the Federal Ministry of Women, Science and Research (BMFWF). 

The Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research (BMBWF) provides annual funding to all recognized higher education institutions (public universities, universities of applied sciences, private universities/private colleges, and teacher training colleges) for the award of merit-based and financial aid scholarships. The legal basis for this is the Study Grant Act (§§ 57ff StudFG).


On the basis of these funds, Karl Landsteiner University awards  Leistungsstipendien (merit-based scholarships) each year in acknowledgement of outstanding academic achievement. The scholarships range from €750 to €1,500 and are paid as a one-off payment. The Leistungsstipendium must be reapplied for each year in accordance with the StudGF.


The scholarship is awarded retrospectively for exams/courses already completed and can be applied for independently of other scholarships.


All further details on the requirements, application process, and application deadline for the Leistungsstipendium StudFG are provided on the internal teaching and learning platform Open Campus (OC) of Karl Landsteiner University. This is accessible to all regular students.

FAQ

You can combine several types of financial aid, provided that they are not mutually exclusive.

The Brain Capital financial model, for example, can be combined with other scholarships, such as student grants or Familienbeihilfe (family allowance).

Important: Some funding programs require exclusivity - always check the specific conditions carefully!

 

Deadlines vary. 

Please pay attention to the different deadlines for the various scholarship offers.

Applications for the Brain Capital financing model can be submitted at any time, but it is best to apply before you start your studies. 

Deadlines for government funding vary depending on the program. For example, the deadline for study grants is usually in November for the winter semester.  

Yes, under certain conditions, including: 

  • Insufficient academic progress, missing ECTS credits, poor performance
  • Breach of contract: for example, not working as a physician in Lower Austria after graduation in caase of the NÖ Landesstipendium Medizin
  • Exceeding the additional income limit: relevant for government grants 
  • Failure to submit follow-up applications on time or missing documents

Typical documents include: 

  • Valid photo ID (driver's license or passport)
  • Registration confirmation (proof of residence)
  • Proof of admission process (e.g. acceptance letter, ranking list)
  • Income statement of parents/partner
  • Confirmation of Familienbeihilfe (family allowance) for siblings

For follow-up applications, usually: 

  • Proof of academic achievements (ECTS and grades)
  • Enrollment confirmation for the new semester (Confirmation of continuation)
