With the innovative Transition Psychiatry Research Center of Karl Landsteiner University ofHealth Sciences, the research team around OÄ Priv. Doz. Dr. Beate Schrank at Tulln University Hospital focuses on the mental health of young people between the ages of 15 and 25.
As a relatively new (research) field within psychiatry, transitional psychiatry deals with the mental challenges of adolescent, young people. There is a particular gap in care for adolescents at the transition between childhood and adulthood, as often neither child psychiatry nor adult psychiatry services appear adequate or attractive. In addition, the transition from support in child psychiatry to adult psychiatry is often difficult and can lead to treatment discontinuation. These circumstances have relevant consequences for the further course of life and for society, since untreated mental problems can lead to losses in education, occupation and social integration as well as to mental illness in adulthood.
This problem is addressed by the nationally and internationally strongly networked research team in work with the greatest possible involvement of stakeholders in accordance with the "Open Innovation in Science" principle. Through multidisciplinary collaboration with the Department of Adult Psychiatry and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the University Hospital Tulln, findings will be obtained that will help to identify and close gaps in care that occur for adolescents during the transition between childhood and adulthood. Furthermore, the research results are to serve for a better understanding of mental development in adolescence and for the prevention of mental illnesses by developing appropriate interventions.
The Province of Lower Austria, together with the Provincial Health Agency of Lower Austria and the Karl Landsteiner University ofHealth Sciences (KL), financially supports the project until 2026 at the site of the University Hospital Tulln (UK Tulln).
