Karl Landsteiner University of Health Sciences offers prospective students with previous knowledge in health science and/or medicine the opportunity to apply for a study place in a higher semester. Therefore, an application using the Online-Application ("Quereinstieg Medizinstudium" = lateral entry) and a respective approval procedure (review of previous academic performances) are required.
Application period
January 9th (Monday) - April 16th (Sunday), 2023 until 23:59h
Requirements for a lateral entry application for the medicine programme
- Of these, up to 30 ECTS (= scope of one semester) can still be ongoing or planned. These courses, which have not been graded yet, must already be announced in the course of the online application.
- Proof of courses of at least 10 ECTS that prepare for writing a scientific thesis.
- Submission of the corresponding confirmations of performance is possible until mid-July at the latest. Academic achievements that are not submitted in time cannot be considered.
We point out that especially for year 3 of the Bachelor programme in Medical Science, only a very limited number of study places are available for lateral entry.
Relevant previous academic achievements
For review of previous academic achievements, the following information has to be provided:
- all available transcripts of examinations/relevant internships completed at other recognised post-secondary educational institutions
- corresponding course descriptions (curriculum abstract)
Relevant for review are all performances, which have been positively completed within the last 10 years at recognised post-secondary educational institutions. If academic achievements are slightly older than 10 years but are still part of a study programme completed within the last 10 years, they can be taken into account.
Scientific theses that have been written and assessed within the framework of an academic study cannot be recognised as theses for a further degree at KL. Relevant preparatory courses can of course be recognised.
Online-Application and administration fee
In the course of the Online-Application, please choose the study programme "Quereinstieg Medizinstudium" and upload the listed documents. When submitting your registration, you will receive your personal payment information. Only after receipt of the administration fee and all your certificates, including the corresponding course descriptions, the verification can be conducted. Only payments made on time and in full can be considered.
Administration fee: EUR 580,00
The fee also includes all costs of a potential supplementary examination as well as a possible oral admission procedure. The administration fee is not refundable.
Should the initial review of the documents show that the requirements for a lateral entry application published on this homepage are not met, the application cannot be continued. In this case, EUR 350,00 of the already paid administration fee will be refunded to you and the admission procedure ends.
Applicants who have applied for both the regular admission procedure Medical Science and for a lateral entry for the medicine programme within one application period and who meet all the application requirements will be refunded 50% of the administration fee of the regular admission procedure after full payment of both fees.
Possible results of the approval procedure
No entry possible
- If less than 50% of the 1st academic year are covered, a supplementary examination for an entry into a higher semester is not possible. This means that after having registered in advance, applicants have to pass through the regular two-stage selection process to enter the Bachelor Medical Science at the KL. If a study place at KL can be offered, a recognition of previous academic performances also in a smaller extent is possible at course or module level. These recognitions do not result in a shortening of the duration of the study programme or in a reduction of the tuition fees.
Entry year 2 or year 3 Bachelor programme Medical Science
- If more than 50% of the ECTS of the 1st or 2nd academic year are recognizable, the missing content must be passed in an examination offered by KL before starting the degree programme. If this supplementary examination as well as the oral part of the admission procedure are passed successfully (and a study place is available), applicants may start in a higher semester of the Bachelor Medical Science at KL.
Individual year 2 Bachelor programme Medical Science
- If the missing content for study year 1 and 2 of the Bachelor programme at KL from previously completed studies at other postsecondary educational institutions is less than 60 ECTS (scope of one academic year), candidates do not start with a regular academic year, but complete the missing content in an individual academic year at KL (upon positive completion of the oral part of the admission procedure and availability of a study place). This year consists of open modules/lines from year 1 and 2. Prerequisite is the time compatibility of those modules (consideration of the study structure). After all required modules/lines have been completed, studies can be continued with the regular year 3 (5th and 6th semester). With this option, it is possible to complete the Bachelor programme within two years.
Individual year 3 Bachelor programme Medical Science
- If the missing content from previously completed studies at other postsecondary educational institutions is less than 60 ECTS (scope of one academic year), candidates may complete the missing content within two semesters in an individual academic year at KL (upon positive completion of the oral part of the admission procedure and availability of a study place). This year consists of all open modules/lines that are required to complete the Bachelor in Medical Science. Prerequisite is the time compatibility of those modules/lines (consideration of the study structure of the different cohorts). With this option, it is possible to complete the Bachelor programme within one year.
Direct entry Master programme Human Medicine
- If the missing content for the Bachelor programme at KL is fully covered by equivalent, successfully completed studies at a recognized domestic or foreign post-secondary educational institution with at least 180 ECTS, it is possible to enter the master programme Human Medicine (compare: selection process master Human Medicine).
- Depending on the volume of previous achievements that can be recognised, it may also be possible to enter a higher semester of the Master programme Human Medicine.
Further requirements for a study place
- The general entry requirements for medicine apply.
- Depending on the result of the approval procedure, a supplementary examination can be required.
- An oral admission procedure in form of an "interview" has to be completed positively.
- Availability of a study place: If the number of applicants exceeds the number of places available, the rectorate will decide on the allocation of the available places based on the available documents/examination results/oral admission procedure.
