Water Quality and Health

Our international research expertise in essential areas of microbiology, molecular diagnostics (DNA/RNA analysis and bioinformatics), hygiene and toxicology is contributed to the scientific education of KL students.

Advanced training

An essential part of research-guided teaching is the education of Bachelor, Master, and PhD students. Currently, 4 dissertations and 2 bachelor's and master's theses each are in progress in our division at the KL.

List of the doctoral theses

Melanie Leopold
Topic: Investigation of human-associated antibiotic resistance in rivers of Lower Austria

Sophia Steinbacher
Topic: Establishing Novel Diagnostic Methods and Statistic Models for Refined Analysis of Faecal Pollution in Water Resources, with focus on the River Danube

Carmen Rehm
Topic: An innovative strategy for the quantification and prediction of toxigenic and non-toxigenic Vibrio cholerae in environmental water resources

Hatice Seda Kilic TU Wien – Hydrology
Topic: Transport and Infection Risks of Waterborne Pathogens in Viennese Surface Water Bodies

List of the Bachelor's and Master's theses

Master's theses

Tanja Fritz
Topic: Genetic typing and characterization of Vibrio cholerae isolates from Lower Austrian bathing waters

Angelika Kabicher
Topic: Antibiotic resistances in clinical isolates in comparison to environmental isolates from the river Danube

Bachelor's theses

Julian Helbich
Topic: Human health risk associated with the dissemination of antibiotic resistances from aquatic environments to the clinic – a literature review

René-Pascal Lang
Topic: Karst aquifers as drinking water resources: public health implications – a literature review

Practical courses

Furthermore, practical courses are offered in the bachelor's degree program Medical Science:

  • Practical course Microbiology and Hygiene (BM10) in the Bachelor's program Medical Science.
  • Execution of a laboratory exercise in the field of molecular biological diagnostics & biochemistry in the Bachelor's program Medical Science.
  • Implementation and supervision of the elective module "Water Quality and Health" (BM12), as an important model in the field of environmental health and prevention (Bachelor's program Medical Science from SS 2021).

Management and coordination of the KL teaching laboratory

As part of our laboratory expertise, we manage, coordinate, provide and prepare the teaching laboratory for the laboratory exercises of the Bachelor of Medical Science program.
