KL PubMed Link & Outside Tool

KL PubMed Link: Research via PubMed, but with Information about KL access options

If you use the specific PubMed Link provided by KL for your PubMed search, you will find the familiar red KL logo in the top right corner.

Click on the red KL Logo in your PubMed search results. A background check will now be performed to determine whether KL has licensed the full text for your search results.

After clicking on the red KL logo, you will be taken to a login page. Enter your OpenCampus login details here to authenticate yourself as a KL member.

IMPORTANT: With this option - using the specific KL PubMed Link - you don't need to sign up or create an account with PubMed itself. You just need to use the KL PubMed Link instead of the usual PubMed URL.

After successfully logging in, you will receive the full text - provided that it is licensed by KL - either via the publisher's website or directly via KLever. If the article is not licensed by KL, you will be redirected to a page recommending that you contact the KL Library Services team for further support.

PLEASE NOTE: Only clicking on the KL logo ensures that full-text accessibility is checked via KL. If you click on the logo of the publisher in question instead (see attached, e.g., Elsevier), you may not be able to access the full text despite having a KL license, as the publisher (especially if you are not directly on site at KL) does not have the information that a KL researcher/student is conducting research and would like access to the full text.

Alternative: KL PubMed Outside Tool

This alternative requires a personal account with PubMed/NCBI. With a PubMed/NCBI account linked to the KL PubMed Outside Tool, you can enjoy all benefits of the KL PubMed link (see above) without actually having to use this specific link. The KL PubMed Outside Tool only needs to be set up once and then remains permanently linked to your personal PubMed/NCBI account.

Log into your PubMed/NCBI account, or create a new account. To do this, click "Login" in the top right corner:

Select one of the options shown to link to your PubMed account, e.g. your ORCID

CAUTION: Don't choose the option "more login options" at the bottom - although this option offers KL in its selection, it will not authenticate you successfully.

Once you have successfully logged into your PubMed/NCBI account, click on your username in the top right corner and then on “Account settings”.

Next, go to „Site Preferences“.

Click on the "Outside Tool“ beneath the headline „PubMed Preferences".

Here, you select KL from the list.

Now you have successfully linked your individual PubMed account to the KL PubMed Outside Tool. Start your research and find the red KL logo on each of your hits. For more information, see above

Alternatively, use the LibKey Browser Extension for your research:

LibKey makes it particularly convenient to use PubMed for your searches - without the need for the KL PubMed Link or the KL PubMed Outside Tool. Information on installing the LibKey browser extension can be found here
