Gene alterations in biliary tract cancer offer potential targets for current or future precision therapies. This is demonstrated by a highly acclaimed study conducted by Karl Landsteiner University of Health Sciences in collaboration with the Medical University of Vienna. In this study, cells from biliary tract cancer were examined for genetic alterations. The results demonstrate the potential of genetic profiling of tumors as a basis for promising and targeted therapies.

Researchers at Karl Landsteiner University developed a new, cost-effective training model for suturing gastric perforations. By bundling various competencies from the organisational units "Division of Biomechanics", “Division of Surgery” at the Tulln site, “Division of Radiotherapy” at the Krems site and the study programme “Human Medicine”, it was possible to design a cost-effective, reproducible, and reusable silicone model meant for the training of medical students. The model was compared and evaluated with real pig stomachs regarding their haptic and mechanical properties as well as their behaviour during suturing.

The situation of people who care for those in need of care at home is influenced by many factors – a team from the University of Vienna and the Karl Landsteiner University of Health Sciences has now identified which of these have a particular impact on the personally perceived caregiver stress. Five factors were found to have an especially strong influence on the subjective burden of caregiving relatives. Of these, the health status of the caregivers has the greatest impact. The study, which has now been published internationally, provides a basis for targeted relief for caregivers in the home setting for social and health policy measures.

How does tolerance occur?

In the presence of Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner, the Karl Landsteiner University of Health Sciences in Krems (KL Krems) celebrated its 10th founding anniversary on Friday, May 12, 2023, together with around 200 guests from education, science, healthcare, politics and business. During the event, former Governor Erwin Pröll was awarded the dignity of Honorary Senator of KL Krems for his services to the foundation and development of the university.

Dr Stephanie Hirschbichler, MSc PhD, is the lead clinician of the movement disorder outpatient clinic at the Neurology Department of St. Pölten University Hospital. In addition to her clinical work, the Consultant Neurologist looks into the mechanisms behind changes in risk-taking behaviour and whether and how the risk-seeking behaviour of patients with different diseases changes when they take dopaminergic medications. Dr Uwe Graichen from the Department of Biostatistics and Data Science implemented an online task to quantify risk tolerance.

Two members of the Department of Molecular Oncology and Hematology, headed by OA Univ.-Prof. Mag. DDr. Klaus Podar, received awards for their research projects at last month's annual OeGHO Congress in Innsbruck.

Biobanks collect samples and data for biomedical research. Samples and data must be carefully curated and linked to each other to be useful for biomedical research purposes. Open discussions of the expectations that sustain this biomedical work can help increase the sustainability of biobanks and research infrastructures.
