Usage of the adaptive quasi-linear viscoelastic model to predict load-unload, stress-relaxation, and sine load of porcine liver

A current study from the Department of Biomechanics in cooperation with the Vienna University of Technology is investigating how well the mechanical behaviour of liver tissue can be modelled. The study showed that conventional models only reliably predict the load on tissue if they are specifically adapted to the respective load situation. The results make it clear that such material parameters are not universally valid, but depend heavily on the speed and type of loading. This is particularly relevant for medical simulations, for example in surgery or in the development of training models. The work was funded as part of the "Functional Anatomical 3D Models (FAM-3D)" project (WST3-F2-528983/0052018).
