Ultrasound-guided minimally invasive thread release of carpal tunnel : a cadaveric study

Recent Publication

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common condition in which the median nerve in the wrist becomes trapped. Those affected often suffer from tingling, numbness or pain in the hand, which can radiate into the arm. In severe cases, surgery is necessary to relieve the nerve. A new method, ultrasound-guided thread release, could be a gentler alternative to conventional surgery. A fine thread is used under ultrasound guidance to precisely sever the constricted ligament in the wrist - with minimal damage to surrounding structures. Initial studies show promising results: The method was completely successful in 73% of cases, with no damage to nerves or blood vessels. Prof. Dr. Johannes Streicher from the Department of Anatomy and Developmental Biology was part of the team of authors.
