Timing and outcome prediction of intravenous thrombolysis in posterior circulation stroke : Insights from the Austrian Stroke Unit Registry

Recent Publication

A current registry study led by the Division of Neurology (University Hospital St. Pölten) is investigating the effectiveness of intravenous thrombolysis for strokes in the posterior cerebral circulation. The results show that patients benefit from this therapy - especially if it is administered very early after the onset of symptoms. The greatest benefit is seen within the first two hours, but the overall benefit remains until around 4.5 hours. Serious complications such as cerebral haemorrhage occurred rarely and were not dependent on the time of treatment. It is also striking that women are treated less frequently and have poorer outcomes overall, which indicates possible gaps in care.
