The snaith-hamilton pleasure scale (SHAPS) and dimensional anhedonia rating scale (DARS) diverge in measuring anhedonia in a community sample of young adults

This article compares two important questionnaires for measuring anhedonia - the reduced ability to feel pleasure. The Snaith-Hamilton Pleasure Scale (SHAPS) primarily measures acute moments of pleasure, while the Dimensional Anhedonia Rating Scale (DARS) additionally measures anticipation and motivation in various areas of life. Both instruments are very reliable, but the DARS shows a higher sensitivity for subtle differences, especially in non-clinical groups. SHAPS is well suited for quick assessments in everyday clinical practice. The study was conducted by Dr Gloria Mittmann MSc, Dr Marina F. Thomas and Dr Verena Steiner-Hofbauer from the Research Centre Transitional Psychiatry.
