An innovative study by researchers from the Division of Internal Medicine 3 at St. Pölten University Hospital shows that blood pressure measurements in an unconventional setting such as a hairdressing salon can be very effective. The ‘Vienna Hairdresser Initiative’ examined 193 people and found that over 65% had elevated values, the majority of whom were unaware of their condition. The pilot study shows that early detection in a non-medical environment can uncover a high number of unreported cases. The simple and inexpensive method could help to raise awareness of hypertension.
