Pain is more than just a physical signal - it is a personal experience that also has psychological and social influences. The psyche plays a decisive role, particularly in the case of chronic pain. Many sufferers suppress pain in order to cope with everyday life, but this can be just as problematic in the long term as anxiety or avoidance behavior. Prim. Assoc. Prof. PD Dr. Martin Aigner from the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapeutic Medicine (Tulln University Hospital) describes in an article in the journal “Manual Medicine” how a holistic view of the body and mind can help to better understand pain mechanisms and develop targeted treatment strategies.
