Practice of radiation therapy for squamous cell esophageal cancer in Austria - a survey on behalf of the ÖGRO-GIT

A recent Austria-wide survey of almost all radiotherapy centres shows how oesophageal cancer (squamous cell carcinoma) is actually treated in this country. The Division of Radiotherapy-Radiation Oncology University Hospital at Krems was also involved. The results show that although modern radiotherapy techniques and combined chemo-radiotherapy are used across the board, the details of the treatment differ significantly in some cases. There are differences between the centres and deviations from international guidelines, particularly with regard to radiation dose, target volume and accompanying examinations. The study makes it clear that although there is a high level of care in Austria, there is a need for further coordination in order to make treatments even more standardised and evidence-based.
