Postcardiotomy extracorporeal membrane oxygenation in patients older than 70 years : Characteristics, outcomes, and variables associated with mortality

Recent Publication

A new international study, in which Prim. Assoc. Prof. PD Dr Dominik Wiedemann from the Division of Cardiosurgery at St. Pölten University Hospital, investigated how well patients over the age of 70 recover from major heart surgery with subsequent ECMO ventilation. They compared this group with younger patients under 70. The result: mortality is significantly higher in the over 70s. In particular, previous strokes, heart failure before the operation and complications afterwards such as bleeding or cardiac arrest worsen the chances of survival for older patients.
