Perioperative Patient Blood Management in Primary Knee and Hip Arthroplasty—Nonsense or Necessity?

Recent Publication

A team of researchers from the University Hospital Krems, one of KL's teaching and research centres, have investigated how often patients suffer from anaemia before and after a hip or knee replacement. The results show that people with hip surgery need a blood transfusion more often than those with knee surgery. Although the overall proportion of transfusions was low, it increased significantly during longer hospital stays. The study shows how important good patient blood management is - i.e. careful monitoring and preparation of blood values before, during and after surgery. In this way, unnecessary transfusions can be avoided and treatment made safer.
