Navigating borders: Impact on the health and well-being of refugees in Austria

Dr. Wanda Spahl MSc. Bakk. BA, PostDoc in the Department of Biomedical Ethics and Health Care Ethics has written a major contribution to the book “Drawing Boundaries and Crossing Borders: Migration in Theory and Practice”. Her contribution sheds light on the Austrian healthcare system and in particular on refugees' access to medical care. Although Austria offers a high-quality and largely equitable healthcare system, there are structural challenges. In principle, asylum seekers and recognized refugees are entitled to the same services as the rest of the population, but in practice, bureaucratic hurdles or financial restrictions can make access difficult.
