Is MRI/US-guided fusion biopsy ready to replace systematic biopsy in detecting clinically significant prostate carcinoma? – a retrospective study

A recent retrospective study from University Hospital St. Pölten investigated whether modern MRI/ultrasound fusion biopsy can replace conventional systematic biopsy in the diagnosis of prostate cancer. The results show that fusion biopsy detects clinically relevant tumours much more frequently and is therefore more accurate. This involves targeting and sampling conspicuous areas on MRI images in real time using ultrasound. However, in some cases it overlooks cancer that is found using the conventional method. For this reason, the combination of both methods currently provides the most reliable diagnosis.
