Inaugural lecture by Professor Sigmar Stricker
On Wednesday 13 May 2026, the Karl Landsteiner Private University hosted the inaugural lecture by Professor Sigmar Stricker. In his lecture, entitled “A developmental perspective on musculoskeletal health”, Professor Stricker examined the mechanisms of homeostasis and regeneration in skeletal muscle in relation to its developmental history.
The event was opened by Rector Univ.-Prof. DDr. Andrea Olschewski, MSc. The laudatory address was delivered by Prof. Dr. Petra Knaus, Professor of Biochemistry of Signal Transduction at Freie Universität Berlin.
In his inaugural lecture, Professor Stricker discussed the developmental biological mechanisms underlying the formation of the musculoskeletal system, particularly the interactions between different cell types, and related these to maintenance and regeneration in adulthood. In doing so, he highlighted similarities between both processes as well as ageing mechanisms such as the ‘Epigenetic Clock of Ageing’ in relation to regenerative processes, and discussed the question of when ageing actually begins. Particular attention was paid to possible early changes in the epigenome, which can have long-term effects and serve as potential starting points for future preventive interventions.
