Melanie Leopold MSc, from the Department of Water Quality and Health, has successfully completed her PhD thesis at TU Wien, which focused on the spread of antibiotic resistance in rivers in Lower Austria. In her dissertation, she showed that although resistance in biofilms occurs locally, it cannot be generalised. She called for international harmonisation of study methods in order to better understand how environmental factors contribute to the development of resistance.
