Combining bedside index of severity in acute pancreatitis (BISAP) and Charlson comorbidity index improves early risk stratification in biliary acute pancreatitis
Recent Publication
In a multicentre study, researchers from the St. Pölten and Tulln University Hospitals have found a way to better assess the risk of patients with biliary pancreatitis, an inflammation of the pancreas caused by gallstones. The researchers combined two existing scoring systems: the BISAP score, which measures the severity of acute inflammation, and the Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI), which measures a person's comorbidities. The results showed that the mortality rate in the group with the highest risk was 50%, while the group with the lowest risk had an almost uncomplicated course of the disease. Thanks to the improved risk assessment, medical treatment can be adapted more quickly and individually to the respective needs of the patient.
