Association of Gut Microbiome with Muscle Mass, Muscle Strength, and Muscle Performance in Older Adults

A new systematic review sheds light on the relationship between the gut microbiome and sarcopenia. Sarcopenia is characterised by the loss of muscle mass and strength in older adults. The analysis of twelve studies shows that a higher presence of specific bacterial species and lower diversity of butyrate-producing bacteria is associated with a greater severity of sarcopenia. Martin Huber Mayer, Master's student of Human Medicine at KL, is the first author of this article.
