Areas of improvement for colorectal cancer screening : Results of a screening initiative for 10,000 health care employees in Austria

The Department of Internal Medicine II at St. Pölten University Hospital has conducted an original study on colorectal cancer screening in Austria. The aim was to gain insights into the practice and quality of screening and to uncover challenges in its implementation. Employees over the age of 50 were able to take part in an uncomplicated stool test, which was handed in at the workplace. Positive test results led to rapid referral for a colonoscopy close to home or work. The results show that, despite the practical access, participation in screening needs to be increased. In addition, differences in the quality of the examinations became apparent, which underlines the need for standardised quality assurance programmes.
