Living and Accomodation

Living

Situated at the gateway to the Wachau valley, Krems an der Donau more than lives up to its title of Lower Austria’s education capital. Life in the town is shaped by the 15,000 students who study at its five higher education institutions and universities. Around 250 of these students attend Karl Landsteiner University. The numerous cultural attractions and leisure opportunities in Krems, its picturesque setting on the Danube river surrounded by hillside vineyards, and the historic character of the town are a big part of why students enjoy studying here so much and feel so much at home.

As well as being a great place to study, there are also plenty of ways to relax in and around Krems, such as walking or cycling along the Danube. Other options include a hike through the terraces of the hillside vineyards or a boat trip with a musical or culinary theme. There’s also modern art on display in the galleries at the Kulturmeile in the centre of Krems and local specialities to be sampled at the wineries and traditional heuriger wine taverns.

First documented in 995, Krems is one of the oldest towns in Lower Austria and today has a population of roughly 25,000. Charming historic buildings give Krems its distinctive flair. As you explore the streets and squares, monasteries and churches, town houses and fortifications, you will find over a millennium of history around every corner. There’s always something new to discover on a walk through the old town of Krems and Stein. And afterwards you can head down to the riverside, explore one of the parks or enjoy a bite to eat at a café, restaurant or heuriger. Krems has one of Austria’s most attractive and lively pedestrian zones, where shopping is a real pleasure.

Visit the Krems student portal or the website of Krems for information about student life, from part-time jobs to accommodation, events and car pooling.
