The Division of Gerontology and Health Research is a multidisciplinary institution funded by the Lower Austrian Health and Social Fund (NÖGUS). Gerontology deals with the description and explanation of the processes of ageing. This department develops scientific principles and findings for healthy ageing and a good quality of life in the life phase of old age. This is also necessary because the life practices and demands of older people are undergoing a major change.
Empirical studies are carried out at regular intervals on the health living conditions and expectations of the elderly and the very elderly, with special consideration given to regional living conditions. The information collected is processed statistically and serves to support modern health and care planning.
Existing care infrastructures are to be further developed conceptually under conditions of frailty, multimorbidity and need for care. Innovative solutions in health promotion, health care and nursing are to be developed. As components of these innovative solutions, assistive and smart technologies will be given high attention in order to guarantee digital sovereignty for older population groups.
