Cancer is the most feared and fastest growing disease in the world today.
Professor Podar's interdisciplinary team is dedicated to experimental research into the biomolecular pathomechanisms of cancer as well as the development and clinical testing of new diagnostics, prognostics and therapeutics. As a bridge builder between preclinical research, clinical care and the promotion of young researchers at the university hospitals and the research laboratories of Karl Landsteiner University, the division headed by Professor Podar aims to contribute to excellence in biomedical research, teaching and, above all, the best possible patient care.
One focus of Professor Podar's work, which has taken him to Harvard Medical School and the Medical University of Heidelberg, among others, is on multiple myeloma - the second most common malignant blood disease. As a physician-scientist, he has been involved in the translation of groundbreaking basic scientific findings that have led to the authorisation of numerous new substances against MM.
Over the last 20 years, their use has revolutionised the treatment of this disease and more than doubled patient survival.
In his inaugural lecture, Professor Podar will give a personal insight into his activities, including personalised therapy concepts and his vision of implementing the "bench-to-bedside and back-to-bench" research approach for the benefit of oncology patients in Lower Austria and beyond.
