Am Lebensende erhalten viele Krebspatient:innen Therapien, die kaum noch Vorteile bringen, aber oft Nebenwirkungen und zusätzliche Belastungen mit sich bringen. Diese Übertherapie verzögert nicht nur wichtige Gespräche über Palliativversorgung, sondern kann auch Ressourcen binden, die besser für die Begleitung der Patient:innen genutzt werden könnten. Für das medizinische Personal ist es ebenfalls eine schwierige Situation, da moralische und emotionale Konflikte entstehen können.
